Flåm Railway and a cruise on Sognefjord

Flåm Railway
The train trip on Flåm railway from Myrdal is one of the high points of the trip. Along the 20 km long trip you will see some of the wildest, most magnificent mountainous Norwegian nature to be found – rivers that have cut deep gorges, waterfalls that plunge from steep mountainsides, snow-covered summits and mountain farms that cling to steep slopes. The train runs slowly or stops at the finest vantage points.

Nærøyfjord is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List
Down in idyllic Flåm, there is time to wander around a bit before the trip continues by ship out in Aurlandsfjord and into Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Europe. Surrounded by mighty mountains up to 1800 metres high, this fjord arm of Sognefjord is spectacular. At its narrowest, it is only 250 metres wide. Nærøyfjord has been inscribed in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. If you are very lucky, you may see some playful seals before the ship docks at Gudvangen. The bus waits to take you up the steep, spectacular hairpin turns of Stalheimskleiva. The road up to Stalheim Hotell curves in 13 sharp turns. After a wonderful view towards Stalheimsfoss and Sivlefoss, there will be a short stop at the hotel to enjoy the view before continuing to Voss.

Stop along the way to visit the over 900-year-old stave church at Borgund, which is a splendid example of this type of architecture. Take a walk in the idyllic old part of Lærdalsøyri, between picturesque wooden houses and well-kept small gardens. A visit to the Salmon museum is well worth while. Norway at its most beautiful
Flåmsbana, © Morten Rakke- rich in culture, nature and culinary experiences

Day 1. Enjoy dinner – prepared by some of Norway’s finest chefs
Skarsnuten serves honest, rustic food, prepared by some of Norway’s finest chefs, and has an excellent, plentiful wine cellar. The atmosphere and the view over a mountain landscape alone are enough to loosen shoulders. An evening at Skarsnuten will leave you relaxed and energetic. After a good night’s sleep and a delicious breakfast provided by the hotel the next morning, you will be ready to explore beautiful Hemsedal.
Overnight accommodation at Skarsnuten Hotel, Hemsedal.

Day 2. Mountain trip or fishing in clear mountain lakes
We recommend a walk or a fishing trip in the mountains, Hemsedal offers many opportunities depending on how you feel and how ambitious you are.

Fish in one of Norway’s best trout rivers
If you want to try your luck fishing, Hemsedal’s Hemslia is one of Norway’s best trout rivers. There are all of 18 lakes and four rivers and streams where you can fish in peaceful surroundings and plentiful fresh mountain air, in anticipation, of course, of a nibble from that fine fat mountain trout.

Top 20 - Hemsedal has a hiking programme, Top 20, which with marked trails and a map will take you to the top of any of Hemsedal’s many beautiful mountain summits. The easier trails are marked in green, and more advanced trails in black. The Top 20 trip to Veslehorn (1300 m) takes you through dramatic terrain to see the impressive Hydnefossen, beautiful mountain lakes and an exquisite panorama of Hemsedal. With the Hemsedal Card, a guide is provided free of charge. More information about this below. Hemsedal bygdatun is a set of farm buildings from about 1730 that is beautifully situated on the mountainside at Ulsåk. Bring a snack to enjoy with coffee, enjoy the view and the smell of tar that comes from these wonderful old cultural buildings. Back at the hotel, a sauna is the just the thing for sore muscles, or simply for refreshment. Enjoy a beer afterwards. The evening and a leisurely, delicious dinner await you. Visiting Skarsnuten is a holiday in itself, whether you admire art, architecture or simply the snug warmth of a fireplace.

Day 2. Via Ferrata - to the top!
Meet at 11.00 just outside Skarsnuten Hotel. Today your destination is the Vesle Røggin summit – Via Ferrata starts here. Experienced guides will meet guests on a mountain ledge, with safety equipment and climbing harnesses for everyone. The trail has varying degrees of difficulty, but not too difficult – everyone has a real chance at mastering the route up to the top. With the help of metal staples, wire and ladders, participants make their way step by step up the mountain wall. Somewhat strenuous and a bit scary, but the experience of mastery keeps people climbing. After three hours, the first person will place his or her feet on the mountain summit. The experience of a personal victory brings a smile to everyone’s face. Hemsedal lies far below, on Vesle Røggin sit the kings (and queens) of the mountain.
Norske Opplevelser in Hemsedal is the only provider in Scandinavia of this type of summit climbing, which has become quite popular in the Alps. Back at the hotel, a sauna will sooth sore muscles and improve circulation. Enjoy a beer afterwards; the evening and a leisurely, delicious dinner remain.

The flowering of Hardanger’s fruit trees is widely known for its beauty. The nature of the area is conducive to many exciting and different water- and snowrelated activities. A kayak on the fjord will bring you close to the elements. Waterfalls gushing down mountainsides, seagulls screeching above you, and if you are lucky, perhaps the head of a curious seal will pop up from the depths of the fjord to inspect you. It winds through magnificent high mountain terrain from Haugastøl via Finse and down to the fjord at Flåm. The trip offers both superb nature and an experience of a cultural monument – the road was built by hand and used for transport during the construction of the Bergen Railway, which opened in 1909. If you find snow and ice more tempting, join a group for glacier hiking on Hardangerjøkulen. Crampons, ice axes and ropes will enable you to see the spectacular blue ice for yourself. Glacier hiking is arranged as a day-tour from Geilo by train to Finse.
